Website design mistakes and how to avoid them

Simply having a website is no longer a way for businesses to stand out from the crowd. Having a good website is.  Websites that have too much content or way too many links are not going to get you clients.  You must have a concise ‘call to action’ and easy navigation so people can find what they are looking for.

Another mistake people make, is not making sure their website will be optimized for other types of media like ipads and cell phones.  A good designer will be sure your website shows up on all the different medias.

Another mistake is making your website so awesome, that is not easy to read for the average person and not easily updated.  If you cannot easily update your website, it will cost you a fortune to maintain so keep that in mind when designing a site.

This brings up another point which is, who will maintain your website?  Will you have to pay someone forever to make updates?  Are you going to get a maintenance plan and budget for it or is the site one that is simple enough that you can and are willing to update yourself?  You have to remember that this is your business and you must keep up with the times and be sure your content matches with what is going on in the outside world and what your customers are looking for.

And finally, links links everywhere!  Some people still try the link building for their websites and/or have links to every website they know and think is informative but be careful!  Search engines can punish you for this and your customer does not want to have to scroll down or search for the link they need among too many.  If you can’t make it simple for them to find what they need, they will leave your website and go to the many others that are out there providing the same service!

In closing, be sure you are dealing with a website professional who understands your companies goals and keeps you on the right track and is up-to-date on the latest standards and best practices in the industry.  Also watch out for extra charges that a lot of designers add on that you can actually get for free!
